简介 Introduction

Pelléas et Mélisande (Pelléas and Mélisande) is an opera by Claude Debussy in five acts. The libretto in French is an adaptation of the symbolist play of the same name by Maurice Maeterlinck (1892). Debussy's only completed opera was first presented at the Opéra Comique in Paris on April 30, 1902. Melisande was played by Mary Garden, whom Debussy chose himself for this role. However, Maeterlinck himself wanted this role to be played by his mistress Georgette Leblanc(Georgette Leblanc).The action takes place in the fictional medieval kingdom of Allemond. Melizanda, abandoned by friends, cries in the forest, where she meets Prince Golo. He tells her about his family and son and falls in love with her. Golo brings Melisanda home and introduces her as his fiancée. But the girl does not know love until she meets his brother Pelléas, who also falls in love with her.

Description: When Claude Debussy first met the troupe that was supposed to perform his music for the poetic play "Pelléas and Melisande", he made a very strange introductory Remark: "First of all, ladies and gentlemen, you must forget that you are singers." What he meant, most likely, was that this music was only one of the elements necessary to create the impression he wished to produce. There is no sequence of arias, duets or quartets; there's not even an upper one before! There are only a few melodies in the opera that could be whistled. Everything is made for one single purpose: to capture and recreate the magical feeling of sadness, the highly poetic, almost mystical atmosphere of Maeterlinck's story about a fabulous medieval country that never existed in reality. This opera is strikingly different from any other ever staged on the French stage or anywhere else. She required singers to spend many months of rehearsals to make them feel natural and organic as they performed their roles. Is it any wonder, then, that it was not correctly understood by most of its first listeners. Even today, a hundred years later, many who listen to it for the first time find it strange. But if you do give yourself the trouble to listen, even for the first time, you inevitably fall under the charm of her magical charms. This charm radiates the most poetic nature of Maeterlinck's play itself. And it is extraordinarily enhanced by Debussy's modest in its means, impressionistic in spirit. It is miraculously held by the calmly expressive interludes performed between scenes during the scenery changes.
