[QUOTE=David Angress;12663836]ADAM Audio’s S-Series uses the Cirrus 42528 with a custom built output circuit which has specs close to those of the mentioned RME card. With the gain ranging that is employed, the specs are even a bit better.
Now, as to what sounds 'better/cleaner', that is a subjective discussion and the ultimate decision we leave to you.
With the digital architecture of the S-Series, if you drive it from an analog source, the audio is re-digitized as it needs to be processed by the Sharc, then is converted back into analog.
So your options are:
Digital source -> external D/A -> ADAM A/D -> DSP -> ADAM D/A -> Class-D amp, or:
Digital source -> digital in -> DSP -> ADAM D/A -> Class-D amp
Purely from an engineering standpoint, we prefer the latter. A few exceptions apply, such as if you prefer the particular sonic characteristics of your favorite DAC.
Pro digital in direct:
- no redundant A/D and D/A conversion
- lowest possible noise and THD
- converter circuits optimized, tested and verified for ADAM amplifier and loudspeakers
- loudspeaker was voiced and tuned for these DACs by ADAM engineers
With that said, the ADAM Audio roadshows that were presented around the US and in Europe over the past months all used the S Series’ analog input driven by external Prism Sound DAC’s. The participants semed very pleased with the sound.
I suggest that you do your own comparisons via your local dealer, or contact us and we will help arrange that for you.
